New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 season begins with a packed schedule featuring established American labels, emerging designers and major creative debuts.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has returned to New York City, opening its Spring/Summer 2027 season with a packed programme of runway shows, presentations and fashion events that place both established names and emerging designers in the spotlight. The September edition, which runs from September 10 to 15, is expected to feature 126 events, including 63 runway shows, as designers unveil collections that will shape fashion conversations for the coming spring and summer season.
This year’s calendar combines some of the biggest names in American fashion with designers making their New York debuts, reflecting the city’s continuing role as a launchpad for new creative ideas and a major commercial gateway into the US fashion market.
Among the most closely watched moments is the debut of Henry Zankov as artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg (DVF). His appointment marks a significant new chapter for the fashion house, which is returning to the official NYFW schedule after a nine-year absence.
Zankov’s debut is expected to attract considerable attention because DVF remains one of New York’s most recognisable fashion names, with its history closely linked to the iconic wrap dress and the evolution of women’s fashion. The Spring/Summer 2027 season also brings several designers and brands making significant returns or first appearances on the New York schedule.
British-American designer Conner Ives is among those making his first NYFW presentation, while designers such as Rachel Comey, Cult Gaia, Sergio Hudson and Ashlyn Park are also part of a programme that places a strong emphasis on creative diversity. Meanwhile, established names including Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and Thom Browne are helping to anchor the week with collections and events expected to draw international buyers, editors, celebrities and fashion enthusiasts.
Coach is also marking its 85th anniversary, while Carolina Herrera celebrates 25 years, adding a layer of heritage and milestone moments to this year’s schedule.
Ralph Lauren Sets the Tone
Even before the official opening, Ralph Lauren offered an early preview of the season with a Spring 2027 collection presented in Manhattan. The 86-year-old designer described the collection as an “irreverent take on romance”, bringing together his signature tailoring with more relaxed and contemporary pieces. The show featured navy and white coats, voluminous trousers, tailored white suits, feathered denim jackets and floor-length gowns.
The collection also reflected Lauren’s continuing ability to connect classic American style with changing consumer tastes. His presentation attracted celebrities including Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo, underscoring the close relationship between fashion, entertainment and popular culture that has become central to New York Fashion Week.
Lauren himself made a brief appearance at the event, reinforcing the significance of a collection from a designer whose name has been synonymous with American fashion for decades.
A New Generation Takes the Spotlight
While established designers continue to dominate attention, this season’s NYFW is also giving considerable space to emerging talent. The presence of younger and less-established designers reflects a broader shift in the fashion industry, where consumers and buyers are increasingly interested in distinctive identities rather than simply established luxury labels. Zane Li, winner of the 2026 Karl Lagerfeld Prize at LVMH, is among the emerging talents attracting attention, alongside designers such as Rachel Scott of Diotima and Ashlyn Park.
For these designers, NYFW offers more than a runway. It provides access to international media, buyers, celebrities and potential customers at one of the industry’s most visible moments of the year. The event is also becoming increasingly international, with designers from outside the United States using New York as a platform to introduce their work to the American market.
Fashion Meets Retail
This year’s fashion week is unfolding alongside a noticeable revival in luxury and fashion retail across New York. Several brands are opening flagship stores and temporary spaces during the period, hoping to take advantage of the large concentration of fashion professionals and visitors in the city. Brands including Moncler, Acne Studios and Róhe are among those using the NYFW period for new retail launches, while smaller labels are introducing pop-ups and physical spaces.
The retail activity highlights the commercial importance of fashion week beyond the runway. For brands, NYFW can serve simultaneously as a platform for unveiling collections, attracting press attention, strengthening relationships with buyers and generating direct consumer interest.
A Changing New York Fashion Week
This season also arrives at a time when the fashion industry is reassessing how traditional fashion weeks operate. Organisers are dealing with a crowded calendar and the challenge of accommodating cultural and religious dates during the week, including September 11 and Rosh Hashanah.
The response has included efforts to provide designers with greater flexibility around venues and presentation formats, allowing creativity and business needs to play a larger role in determining how collections are presented. At the same time, technology continues to make its way deeper into fashion.
Google’s Gemini has partnered with fashion brand L’Agence on virtual try-on technology for the 2026 NYFW season, reflecting the industry’s growing experimentation with artificial intelligence and digital shopping experiences.
More Than a Runway
For decades, New York Fashion Week has been one of the defining events on the international fashion calendar. Its roots date back to 1943, when fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert established “Press Week” to promote American designers at a time when the Second World War made it difficult for American fashion journalists to travel to Paris. The event eventually evolved into the modern New York Fashion Week and became one of the four major global fashion weeks, alongside London, Milan and Paris.
Today, NYFW has grown beyond traditional runway presentations. It is a meeting point for fashion, entertainment, business, technology and popular culture. From front-row celebrity appearances to street style, social media trends and retail launches, what happens in New York can influence what consumers around the world will be wearing months later.
The Spring/Summer 2027 edition therefore arrives with expectations extending beyond individual collections. With established designers defending their influence, younger creatives seeking international recognition and brands competing for consumers’ attention, New York Fashion Week is once again positioning itself as both a showcase of fashion and a reflection of where the industry is heading next.
