Oyo Private Schools Declare Friday shutdown Over Abducted Pupils
All private schools across Oyo State are to remain closed on Friday, June 5, 2026, as a solidarity measure following the abduction of pupils and teachers in the Oriire area of the state, an umbrella body of private school owners has announced.
The Coalition of Non-State Schools, which comprises the Association of Private School Owners, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, and the Association of Model Islamic Schools, among others, directed its members not to open for academic activities on that day.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the coalition’s acting chairman, Jamiu Muhammed, and acting secretary, Mayowa Solademi, said the resolution was taken “following the recent school abduction incident and the need to ensure the safety and security of pupils, students, staff, and school communities.”
“All private schools across Oyo state shall be closed on Friday, 5th June, 2026, in solidarity with calls for the prompt release of our kidnapped pupils and teachers,” the statement read.
The coalition also announced that a special prayer session would be organised by all private schools across the state on the same day to seek divine intervention, protection, peace, and security for communities, schools, and the nation at large.
According to the statement, “Parents, guardians, school proprietors, teachers and students are encouraged to participate in the prayer programme as directed by their respective schools.”
The coalition further called on all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts towards safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as we collectively seek lasting peace and security in Oyo State,” the coalition added.
The abduction incident in Oriire has continued to draw reactions from across the state, with traditional and religious leaders also calling for urgent action. The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye (Orumogege III), had earlier urged God to pacify the hearts of the abductors, warning of possible collateral damage.
