Portable Welcomes Baby After Boxing Defeat In Lagos
Hours after a high-profile celebrity boxing loss in Lagos, Afrobeats singer Portable has announced the birth of a baby boy with his wife, Omobewaji Ewatomi, describing the development as more significant than his defeat in the ring.
The announcement came on Saturday via the singer’s Instagram page, shortly after he lost to skit maker Carter Efe at the “Chaos in the Ring 4” event held at Balmoral Hall, Lagos. The bout ended in a unanimous decision in favour of Carter Efe.
Reacting to the contrasting moments, Portable framed the birth of his child as a personal victory. “My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt, but not my child,” he wrote.
The singer, however, raised concerns about the outcome of the match, alleging bias in the judging. “You can only buy a belt with money, but a child cannot be bought. You people cheated. They can’t pay the money amounting to the sum of N23 billion. I thought I was going to dance with my belt, but I ended up with my new baby,” he stated, while also thanking his wife following the delivery.
Omobewaji confirmed the birth in a separate post, writing “Alhamdullillah” and indicating that the newborn has been named Jamal Iremide. She described the child as “my little blessing,” signalling the family’s celebration of the arrival.
Portable also disclosed that the birth coincided with his time in the boxing ring. “While my wife was in labour, I was fighting. She gave birth to a boy… I wanted a third belt for my children; I already have two… You can have the belt,” he added.
The event forms part of a growing trend of celebrity boxing matches in Nigeria’s entertainment space, where public figures engage in exhibition bouts that attract online audiences and sponsorship attention. In this instance, the fight further extended an ongoing rivalry between Portable and Carter Efe, both known for their strong social media presence.
The latest development adds to Portable’s expanding family. The singer has previously acknowledged having multiple children from different relationships and has publicly expressed intentions regarding a polygamous family structure.
While the boxing result continues to generate reactions among fans online, the birth of his son introduces a parallel personal milestone, one the singer has openly prioritised over sporting accolades.
