Presidency Clarifies Wale Edun and Ahmed Dangiwa Resignations
The Presidency has dismissed reports suggesting that Wale Edun and Ahmed Musa Dangiwa were dismissed from the Federal Executive Council. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that both ministers submitted their resignations voluntarily. Mr. Edun, who turned 70 on Monday, cited deteriorating health as the primary driver for his exit. He intends to shift his focus toward private business interests.
Mr. Edun’s departure follows a private valedictory meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House. In his resignation letter, the former Finance Minister praised the President’s leadership and his commitment to the “Renewed Hope” agenda. He leaves behind a complex portfolio marked by aggressive economic restructuring. Mr. Edun’s career, which includes long tenures at the World Bank and the co-founding of Stanbic IBTC, lent significant weight to the administration’s fiscal strategy.
Mr. Dangiwa also opted to step down, concluding his term as Minister of Housing and Urban Development. The Presidency lauded both men for their contributions to the current economic reform agenda. These dual exits mark a notable adjustment in the President’s inner circle. The administration now pivots toward a new phase of fiscal implementation.
President Tinubu wasted no time in reshaping his economic team. Taiwo Oyedele assumes the role of Finance Minister, tasked with maintaining momentum on fiscal reforms. The President expects him to bring both discipline and innovation to the ministry. Stability remains the stated goal as the administration navigates this transition.
The housing ministry sees a similarly swift transition. President Tinubu intends to nominate Muttaqha Rabe Darma, also from Katsina State, to replace Mr. Dangiwa. Mr. Darma will face Senate confirmation before stepping into the role. The government aims to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing housing and urban development programmes during this personnel shift.
These changes underscore the fluid nature of cabinet appointments under President Tinubu. The departure of senior technocrats like Mr. Edun signals a potential recalibration of the administration’s economic tactics. Analysts will watch closely to see if the new appointments represent a change in policy direction. For now, the Presidency insists the focus remains on economic resilience.
