Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to beat 10-man Marseille 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday, claiming their second Ligue 1 win of the season in a Le Classique that swung inside a frantic quarter of an hour.
The result lifted the defending champions to sixth on the table with eight points, five behind leaders Monaco, according to the league standings. For Marseille it was a fifth straight defeat across all competitions, leaving them 17th and second from bottom on three points, days after a 4-1 loss to Besiktas in the Europa League.
The first half offered little. The tie only opened up on 66 minutes, when substitute Ferran Torres headed home from Desire Doue’s cross to put PSG in front.
Torres has made a fast start in Paris. The Spain forward now has seven goals in six appearances since arriving from Barcelona at the start of the season, form that follows his winning goal in the 2026 World Cup final.
Marseille hit back six minutes later. Amine Gouiri fed Angel Gomes near the edge of the PSG box, and the England midfielder cut inside before finishing with his right foot to level at 1-1.
The parity lasted two minutes. Marquinhos rose to meet a Nuno Mendes cross, saw his first effort saved by Jeffrey de Lange, then reacted quickest to bundle in the rebound. It was the Brazilian captain’s third league goal of the campaign.
Marseille’s night grew harder on 77 minutes. Captain Timothy Weah was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Nuno Mendes, reducing the hosts to 10 men as they chased an equaliser that never came.
PSG manager Luis Enrique felt his side grew into the contest. “The second period was much better than the first. We sought to improve compared with the first half and create many chances,” he said after the match.
The win gives PSG something to build on before the international break, after a stuttering title defence that has already brought two draws and a home loss to Monaco. Their next league fixture is at home to Le Mans on 10 October.
For Marseille, the picture is bleaker. Four successive league defeats and the European setback have dragged them into the relegation zone early, and the trip to the break arrives at a useful moment for a squad badly in need of a reset.
