UK Opens 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Applications
The United Kingdom has opened applications for the 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, offering fully funded opportunities for mid-career professionals and university academics from Nigeria and other Commonwealth countries, with the submission deadline set for 25 August 2026.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, which administers the programme, has launched a new Commonwealth Fellowship Programme featuring two distinct strands: Professional Fellowships and Academic Fellowships. The announcement was made by the UK in Nigeria via its official X handle on Thursday, urging eligible candidates to apply before the closing date.
Applications opened at 9:00 am BST on 28 July 2026 and will close at 4:00 pm BST on 25 August 2026. Both strands are open to candidates from all Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria.
The Professional Fellowships are designed for mid-career professionals from eligible Commonwealth countries, excluding the UK, to undertake a programme of professional development at a UK host organisation working in their sector. Applicants must have at least five years of relevant full-time or equivalent part-time work experience by the proposed start of the fellowship.
The Academic Fellowships are intended for academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country. Fellows will undertake a programme of academic skills update, knowledge exchange and networking, with a view to establishing future collaboration with a UK university.
Both fellowship types are designed for citizens of Commonwealth countries to spend time in the UK at an organisation working on a programme of professional or academic development that will have a developmental impact upon their return home.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has provisionally planned to offer approximately 40 fellowships in total for the 2026/27 programme. Of these, about 10 fellowships are available for citizens of Commonwealth countries not eligible for official development assistance, while approximately 30 are reserved for citizens of countries eligible for such assistance. Nigeria falls within the ODA-eligible category.
The fellowships cover six development themes, which applicants must address in their proposals:
· Science and technology for development
· Improving population health, health systems and capacity
· Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
· Strengthening peace, security and governance
· Strengthening resilience and response to crises
· Access, inclusion and opportunity
Professional Fellowships for the 2026/27 cycle must begin between mid-February and mid-March 2027 and last between six weeks and three months. Academic Fellowships must begin in January or February 2027 and are of three months’ duration.
To be eligible for either fellowship, applicants must:
· Be citizens of, or have refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country
· Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
· Be employed by an organisation they will return to after the fellowship
· Provide at least two references, one of which must be from their current employer. Applications for which references are not received will be considered ineligible
· Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the previous five years
Professional Fellowship applicants must have at least five years of relevant work experience by the proposed start of the fellowship. Academic Fellowship applicants must hold a PhD and be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country.
Nigeria is listed among the eligible Commonwealth countries.
Different UK-based organisations have applied to host Commonwealth Fellows in 2027, each running a bespoke fellowship programme that candidates can apply for. Host organisations include Bees for Development, the British Geological Survey, Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, the University of Bath, and several NHS trusts and healthcare institutions, among others.
Some hosts intend to nominate candidates from their known and established networks. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission advises prospective applicants to contact hosts directly using the information on their websites before applying for their fellowship programme.
Interested applicants are required to complete the online Commonwealth Fellowship application form through the CSC application portal. In the application form, prospective Fellows are asked to list all undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications obtained, list up to ten publications and prizes where applicable, provide details of their employment history and explain how each job is relevant, and provide a development impact statement explaining how the fellowship relates to one of the CSC’s six development themes.
Each fellowship provides approved return airfare from the fellow’s home country to the UK and reimbursement of the standard visa application fee. Fellows receive a stipend payable monthly for the duration of the award at the rate of £2,218 per month, or £2,753 per month for those at organisations in the London metropolitan area, based on 2025/26 rates.
The package also includes an arrival allowance, with additional funding potentially available for eligible short courses, conferences and travel to other UK organisations where such activities form part of the fellowship programme.
Applications close at 16:00 BST on Tuesday 25 August 2026. Applications will be assessed on the extent to which the proposed fellowship will ensure the transfer of skills relevant to the six CSC development themes. Selection criteria include the quality and relevance of the programme, development impact, and candidate potential.
