Ebonyi: Three Children Abducted as Police Launch Investigation
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of three children in Abakaliki, triggering renewed concerns over security in the state.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Nkwegu, an area located directly opposite the Nkwegu Military Cantonment gate in Abakaliki Local Government Area. The proximity of the crime scene to a military facility has heightened public anxiety and raised questions about safety in residential communities around security formations.
According to police authorities, the parents of the children reported the abduction shortly after it occurred. The victims include one two-year-old boy and two girls aged four and two. The Ebonyi State Police Command spokesman, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the details while speaking on Sunday.
Ukandu disclosed that, as of the time of reporting, the kidnappers had not contacted the families, and no ransom demand had been made. He also noted that no arrests have been recorded so far.
“We are aware of the incident. It happened in the early hours of February 7,” the police spokesperson said. “There has been no demand for ransom, and no arrests have been made yet. Our officers are investigating and working towards rescuing the abducted children.”
The police command stated that a full investigation is underway and that a rescue operation has been activated to ensure the safe return of the children. Residents of Nkwegu and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies by providing any useful information.
The abduction adds to growing concerns over child safety and kidnapping in parts of Ebonyi State, reinforcing calls for improved community policing and stronger preventive security measures.
