Insecurity: Pope Leo XIV Condemns Nigerian Attacks
Pope Leo XIV has condemned the recent wave of violent attacks across Nigeria, expressing deep concern over the scale of killings and urging authorities to take decisive action to protect citizens.
In a statement shared on his official X account, the pontiff said he received news of the attacks “with sorrow and concern,” noting the heavy loss of life recorded in several communities. He expressed solidarity with victims of violence and terrorism and called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property.
“I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” the Pope wrote.
The Pope’s remarks come amid renewed insecurity across parts of Nigeria, with Kwara State recording the deadliest incident. Between February 3 and 4, armed assailants attacked the villages of Woro and Nuku in Kaiama Local Government Area. While police and the state government confirmed 75 deaths, residents and local officials insist the toll may be far higher, as bodies continue to be recovered from nearby bushland.
Following the attack, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of additional troops to the affected area and declared a nationwide security emergency. An army battalion has since been deployed to Kaiama, while Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Kwara State to commiserate with affected communities.
The violence has drawn international condemnation, with the United Nations, the United States and Türkiye denouncing the killings. Türkiye also pledged military support to Nigeria’s security efforts. Amnesty International, however, has criticised the government over alleged security lapses, noting that warnings were reportedly raised before the attacks.
Similar deadly incidents were also reported in Katsina, Benue and Niger states, reinforcing growing concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security challenges and the urgent need for stronger protection of vulnerable communities.
