Truck Driver Arrested After Cyclist Dies Under LASUTH Bridge in Ikeja

A truck driver has been arrested following a fatal road accident that led to the death of a cyclist under the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Bridge in Ikeja, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, describing it as a tragic collision involving a DAF articulated truck and a cyclist at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja.

According to preliminary investigations by LASTMA, both the cyclist and the truck, which was approaching from the Maryland axis, attempted to enter the roundabout beneath the LASUTH Bridge at the same time. In the process, the cyclist reportedly failed to keep a safe distance from the truck, leading to a fatal impact.

LASTMA said the cyclist was crushed during the collision and died instantly from the injuries sustained.

Officials of the agency, who were on traffic duty at the scene, swiftly intervened and apprehended the truck driver, who allegedly tried to flee after the accident. The suspect was subsequently handed over to officers at the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

To restore traffic flow and ensure public safety, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) evacuated the remains of the deceased from the roadway.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the victim’s family. He also cautioned cyclists and other vulnerable road users against riding on expressways and major arterial roads.

Giwa reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to road safety, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads.
