Gunmen Abduct Nine Catholic Worshippers in Benue Church Attack

Gunmen have abducted nine worshippers from Saint John’s Catholic Church in Ojije, Utonkon District of Ado Local Government Area, Benue State, in what residents describe as a fresh blow to security in rural communities.

The abduction occurred on Sunday night during a vigil held within the church premises. Witnesses said the attackers stormed the compound and forcefully took the worshippers away, causing panic among other congregants.

A former councillor representing Ukwuenyo Ward in Ado LGA, Emmanuel Udah, confirmed the incident and described it as a calculated attack on a place of worship. He said the assault had left residents traumatised and fearful, noting that many now feel unsafe even in religious spaces traditionally regarded as sanctuaries.

Udah called on the government to urgently strengthen security in the area, warning that repeated attacks across Benue State have created a sense of abandonment among rural dwellers. According to him, farmers, traders and worshippers are increasingly vulnerable as insecurity continues to disrupt daily life and economic activities.

Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command said nine worshippers were abducted. Police spokesperson Udeme Edet disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, has deployed tactical units in collaboration with local vigilantes to track the gunmen and rescue the victims.

The police assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction, as authorities intensify operations to curb kidnapping and violent attacks in Benue State.
