Dr. Peter Akpe Sworn in as Bayelsa State Deputy Governor
Dr. Peter Akpe was officially sworn in as the sixth Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State on Wednesday, following his confirmation by the State House of Assembly on Tuesday. His appointment will complete the remaining two years of the current administration.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Bayelsa State Executive Chamber in Yenagoa, where Governor Senator Douye Diri, alongside the new Deputy Governor, also inaugurated four new commissioners and 14 permanent secretaries.
In his remarks during the Oath-taking ceremony, Governor Diri reflected on the passing of the former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11, 2025. He prayed for the repose of Ewhrudjakpo’s soul and acknowledged the full state burial that was held in his honour. Diri expressed his gratitude to the state and its stakeholders for their collaboration and unity during the mourning period.
Governor Diri further noted the divine nature of the events, particularly remarking on the unplanned synchrony of their attire on the day of the ceremony, calling it a “divinely instructive” moment. The Governor explained that after much prayer and consultation, he forwarded Dr. Akpe’s name for confirmation to the House of Assembly, which expedited the process.
“I prayed and looked for competency, character, and someone who was God-fearing, and I found that in one person called Peter Akpe, PhD,” Governor Diri said. He also expressed his gratitude to the Assembly for their swift clearance of Dr. Akpe’s nomination.
Governor Diri assured Dr. Akpe of his full support, expressing .confidence that the new Deputy Governor would be a reliable ally in fulfilling the promises made to the people of Bayelsa State. He charged the new appointee to be mindful of the solemn oath of office and to ensure that his leadership would always reflect the values of honor, empathy, and the well-being of the state.
The ceremony was also marked by the inauguration of 18 permanent secretaries and four commissioners, strengthening the leadership team of the Bayelsa State government as it enters the final two years of its term.
