Atiku Congratulates Arsenal, Draws Lessons For Nigeria’s Future
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Arsenal Football Club on winning the English Premier League title, using the occasion to draw deliberate parallels between the club’s transformation and his long-standing economic and political vision for Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Arsenal’s triumph as a product of resilience, disciplined planning, bold decision-making, and commitment to a long-term vision.
“Arsenal’s victory did not happen overnight. It is the product of years of rebuilding, disciplined planning, bold decision-making, and the courage to stay the course even when success seemed distant. These are the same principles that have guided my journey in both public life and the private sector,” the former vice president said.
Atiku linked the club’s footballing philosophy to his own economic blueprint, which he said has consistently centred on private-sector-led growth, job creation, and institutional reform.
“Like a well-managed football club, a nation must create an enabling environment where talent can thrive, innovation is rewarded, and performance is sustained,” he stated.
The former presidential candidate also drew attention to Arsenal’s investment in youth development, arguing that Nigeria must adopt a similar approach to unlock national prosperity.
“Just as Arsenal invested in youth development and a clear footballing philosophy, Nigeria must invest in its people, reform its institutions, and stay committed to a coherent economic strategy,” he added.
Arsenal enjoys one of the largest support bases in Nigeria, and the Premier League title has been met with widespread celebration among Nigerian fans who remained loyal through years of trophyless campaigns and near misses.
Atiku acknowledged that loyalty, describing it as a reflection of the Nigerian character. “Their loyalty is a reflection of the enduring Nigerian spirit, hopeful, resilient, and unbreakable,” he said.
The Wazirin Adamawa used the moment to send a pointed political message ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and patient.
“Arsenal’s triumph is a powerful reminder that persistence, discipline, and an unwavering belief in one’s mission ultimately produce results. Nigerians should draw inspiration from this moment and remain hopeful that with unity, purpose, and the right leadership, the 2027 election can mark the beginning of a brighter, more prosperous, and more inclusive chapter for our nation,” he said.
Atiku also encouraged the club to pursue Champions League glory, saying the same spirit that delivered the Premier League title is capable of securing a historic double.
“The world is watching, and millions of Nigerians are cheering you on,” he stated.
