Assists Rule Puts Messi Ahead Of Mbappe In World Cup Golden Boot Race

Lionel Messi has moved to the front of the adidas Golden Boot race and climbed to the summit of FIFA’s Creativity Power Ranking, positioning the Argentina captain at the centre of two individual contests that will run alongside Sunday’s 2026 World Cup final against Spain.

FIFA published the revised Golden Boot standings and its updated Power Rankings on Thursday, once the semi finals had been settled. The numbers tell a familiar story. Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappe are locked on eight goals apiece at the top of the scoring chart, exactly as they were at the closing stage of Qatar 2022. What separates them this time is the assist column. Messi has four, Mbappe three, and under FIFA’s rules assists serve as the first tiebreaker when players end level on goals. Should the totals hold, the Argentine would claim the award for the first time in his career.

The two men arrive at that juncture from very different positions. Mbappe’s tournament is effectively over as a scoring contest after France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the last four, though he retains one final chance to add to his tally in Saturday’s third place playoff against England. Messi, by contrast, still has the biggest stage of all in front of him. Argentina meet Spain in the final on Sunday, giving him ninety minutes, and potentially more, to settle the matter himself.

Behind the leading pair, Norway’s Erling Haaland sits third on seven goals despite his side’s quarter final exit, a haul that now looks beyond the reach of the chasing group. England’s Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane share fourth on six each, and can still climb during the third place fixture. Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal, the highest placed finalist after Messi, has scored five and remains the one man among the last two teams who could yet disrupt the Messi and Mbappe duel.

The FIFA Power Rankings, a separate performance index the governing body publishes across attacking, creative and defensive categories, added further weight to Messi’s late surge. His two assists in Argentina’s 2-1 win over England lifted him five places to the top of the Creativity ranking with a rating of 8.41, displacing France’s Michael Olise. Belgium’s Jeremy Doku, Mbappe and England’s Anthony Gordon completed the top five in that category.

In the Attacking ranking, Mbappe held first place on 8.93, with Messi closing to 8.63 in second and Bellingham third on 8.22. The Defending ranking was headed by Spain’s Rodri on 8.03, an early pointer to the midfield battle Argentina must win on Sunday. Portugal’s Diogo Costa retained top spot in the goalkeeping category for shot stopping, while England’s Jordan Pickford continued to lead the distribution ranking ahead of Spain’s Unai Simon.

The individual numbers carry unusual historical resonance. Messi has never won the Golden Boot in five previous World Cups. He finished second in 2022 with seven goals, one behind Mbappe, whose hat trick in that final at Lusail Stadium clinched the award even as Argentina lifted the trophy on penalties. He tied for third in 2014 with four goals, a tournament in which he took the Golden Ball as best player, an honour he claimed again in 2022. The scoring prize, curiously, has always escaped him.

His route to the top of the chart this year has been the most productive World Cup campaign of his career. According to tournament records, Messi opened with a hat trick against Algeria, becoming the oldest player to score three in a single World Cup match, then found the net in successive rounds to push past his previous personal best for a single edition. At 39, in what is widely expected to be his final appearance at the competition, he has extended his standing as the leading goal contributor in World Cup history.

Mbappe’s tournament has been scarcely less prolific. The forward moved ahead of Olivier Giroud as France’s all time record scorer earlier in the finals, and his knockout stage goals carried him past Brazil’s Ronaldo for the most in World Cup elimination matches. At 27, with more than a dozen World Cup goals already, he remains on a trajectory towards Miroslav Klose’s all time record of 16, a target for future editions rather than this one.

The team context sharpens the stakes. Argentina go into Sunday as defending champions, having won in Qatar four years ago, and are chasing back to back titles. Spain, semi final conquerors of both France and Belgium on their run, are seeking a first World Cup crown since 2010 and a second in their history. Bookmakers and FIFA’s own probability model make the contest tight. The projection attached to the fixture favours Spain at 41.4 percent, ahead of Argentina on 27.3 percent, with a draw inside regulation rated at 31.3 percent.

For Messi, the equation is simple enough. A goal on Sunday would very likely secure the one major World Cup distinction missing from his record, and could do so on the same evening he attempts to defend the title with Argentina. For Mbappe, Saturday’s meeting with England offers a narrow window to force the issue before the final is even played. The scoring race that defined the last World Cup final has, once again, come down to the same two names.
