Customs Boss Pledges Support for $1tr Economy

Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi says the Nigeria Customs Service is committed to supporting Nigeria’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy through trade facilitation, revenue generation and border management.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has pledged the support of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) towards achieving Nigeria’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy. Adeniyi committed while delivering a keynote address at the New Nigeria Festival held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Conference Hall in Abuja.

He said the economic target was achievable if the strategies developed to attain it were properly implemented and translated into measurable results. According to him, the NCS has moved beyond discussions and ideas by implementing reforms aimed at supporting the country’s economic objectives.

He cited the Service’s ongoing modernisation reforms, including the deployment of B’Odogwu, the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme and the Advance Ruling mechanism. Adeniyi said the initiatives were designed to facilitate legitimate trade, improve predictability in the trading environment and strengthen revenue generation.

“Execution is nothing if it is not concrete. We must move from ideas to action and ensure that whatever we plan translates into results. That is how we can begin to see the kind of transformation we are talking about,” he said.

The Customs boss stressed that achieving the $1 trillion economy could not be left to government agencies alone. He said the target would require the collective commitment of government institutions, businesses and citizens, with each stakeholder taking responsibility for contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Adeniyi noted that the NCS was strategically positioned to contribute to the transformation through its responsibilities in revenue collection, trade facilitation and border management. He therefore called for a shift from rhetoric to implementation, saying Nigeria’s economic ambition could only be achieved when institutions and citizens took ownership of their responsibilities and converted plans into practical and measurable action.
