‘Breaking Bad’ Actor RJ Mitte Dies at 34

American actor RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr. in the hit television series Breaking Bad, has died at 34. His representatives confirmed his death, while authorities said the cause had not been determined.

American actor RJ Mitte, who rose to prominence for his role as Walter White Jr. in the television drama Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34.

Mitte’s representatives announced his death on Monday, October 12, describing him as a beloved actor, philanthropist and disability rights advocate.

Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told the Associated Press that Mitte was pronounced dead at about 1:30 p.m. in Brownsville, Texas. She said the cause of death was not immediately known and that an autopsy would be performed.

Mitte’s role in ‘Breaking Bad’

Mitte was widely recognised for portraying Walter White Jr., the son of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, in AMC’s crime drama Breaking Bad.

The series followed Walter White, a chemistry teacher who becomes involved in the production and distribution of methamphetamine after receiving a cancer diagnosis. It ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013.

Mitte appeared in nearly every episode, playing a character also known as Flynn who, like the actor, had cerebral palsy.

His personal experience with the neurological condition helped inform his performance, bringing elements of his own life to the character’s story.

Cranston paid tribute to his former co-star in a Facebook post following the news of his death.

“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight,” Cranston said, describing Mitte as his “sweet son”.

The actor recalled meeting Mitte when he was 14 and praised his enthusiasm, determination and development throughout the series.

Cranston said Mitte approached the demanding filming schedule with determination and grew into a fine actor during their time working together.

Beyond acting

Away from the screen, Mitte became an advocate for greater disability representation and inclusion in the entertainment industry.

Living with cerebral palsy, he used his public profile to challenge stereotypes about people with disabilities and encourage more authentic representation in film and television.

His representatives said he drew on his personal experience to bring authenticity to his role in Breaking Bad and used his platform to promote disability awareness and inclusion.

Mitte also worked with organisations supporting people with disabilities. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and was president of the Mitte Foundation, which supported philanthropic and community initiatives related to disabilities.

His other screen credits included the television series Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice. He also worked as a producer on several independent films.

A career shaped by representation

Mitte’s performance in Breaking Bad brought him international recognition, but his work also contributed to conversations about how disability is represented on screen.

In a 2015 interview, he discussed the experience of being a disabled actor playing disabled characters and the importance of portraying the strength of people living with disabilities.

His career extended beyond his best-known role, combining acting with advocacy and work intended to improve inclusion.

Mitte’s death has prompted tributes from colleagues and renewed attention to his contributions to television and disability advocacy.

He is remembered for his portrayal of Walter White Jr. and for using his platform to encourage greater visibility for people with disabilities.

Authorities had not announced an official cause of death at the time of reporting.
