Nigerian singer Mayorkun has spoken about his difficulty finding a suitable woman to marry, revealing that his elder brother advised him to approach women during the day rather than at night.
Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has opened up about his struggle to find a suitable woman to marry, sharing advice he received from his elder brother.
The singer made the disclosure during a recent episode of the Uncut podcast, where he discussed relationships and the challenges of finding a life partner.
According to Mayorkun, he told his elder brother that he had been struggling to find the right woman for marriage. His brother responded by questioning when he last approached a woman in broad daylight.
“I told my big bro I have been struggling to find the right woman to marry, and he asked me a simple question: ‘When was the last time you spoke to a girl in broad daylight?’” the singer said.
Mayorkun said he agreed with his brother’s advice, adding that he believes a responsible woman should not be out late at night.
“You can’t be a responsible girl and still be outside by 1 a.m.,” he said.
Mayorkun recounts experience with woman he dated
The Mayor of Lagos crooner also recounted an experience with a woman he once invited on a date.
According to him, the woman claimed she did not know him or his music when they met. However, during their second date, one of his older songs played on the radio, and she sang along to the lyrics.
The experience, he suggested, reflected the difficulty of determining whether someone is being genuine in a relationship.
Mayorkun also identified pretence and what he described as fake lifestyles as factors that could make finding a suitable partner difficult.
Singer’s recent comments on marriage
The singer’s latest remarks come after he recently discussed other conditions he would want to establish before marriage and fatherhood.
In an appearance on the In My Opinion podcast, Mayorkun said he wanted a prenuptial agreement before marriage and a DNA test for any child he had with his partner.
He disclosed that his partner was unhappy when he raised the proposal and said he had considered conducting a paternity test without informing her. His comments generated reactions online, particularly around trust, paternity and expectations between couples.
Mayorkun’s latest comments have added to public discussion about his views on relationships and settling down, with the singer sharing both his personal experiences and advice he received from his family.
Mayorkun says parents should not choose partners for their children
The singer also shared his views on parental involvement in marriage, saying he believes adults should have the freedom to choose whom they want to spend their lives with.
According to Mayorkun, although he would try to help his mother understand and accept his choice of partner, he would not allow her to make the final decision for him.
“I think I’m old enough to make my decisions when it comes to who I spend my life with. I mean, I will try my best to let my mom see the something, but I think we are past that era of maybe your parents telling you who to marry. That time has passed. I no dey for that one,” he said.
The singer also questioned why parents should object to their children marrying someone from a different religious or cultural background.
Using a potential marriage to a Muslim woman as an example, Mayorkun argued that people should be allowed to marry those they love, regardless of their partner’s background.
He added that he would be comfortable marrying a Somali woman if that were the person he genuinely wanted to spend his life with.
His comments reflect his belief that, while parents may offer guidance, the final decision about whom to marry should rest with the individuals involved.
