“If We Lose, It’s Over” — Guardiola on Arsenal Showdown

Pep Guardiola has conceded that defeat to Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday would effectively end Manchester City’s Premier League title defence, but insisted that even a victory would not guarantee a fifth consecutive crown for the champions.

Arsenal travel to Manchester holding a six-point advantage at the summit, though City retain a game in hand. A win for Mikel Arteta’s side would stretch the gap to nine points with only five matches remaining, a margin Guardiola acknowledged would prove insurmountable.

“If we lose, yeah, it’s over,” Guardiola told journalists during his pre-match press conference on Friday. “But the other two results, knowing that Arsenal didn’t win against Bournemouth, we still have games to play. Six games are a lot, given our calendar especially.”

The Gunners have stumbled in recent weeks, recording just one victory in five outings across all competitions since falling to City in the League Cup final last month. They laboured past Sporting Lisbon in midweek to secure a Champions League semi-final berth, while Guardiola’s men have enjoyed a full week of rest following their 3-0 triumph at Chelsea.

Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal’s standing as the division’s form side over the campaign thus far. “They have been the best so far, but we want to challenge them,” the Spaniard stated. He cautioned his squad against emotional entanglement, adding: “I said today to the players, ‘It is just a football game,’ and we have to approach it like a football game. If you get distracted by emotions, that is how you lose focus.”

City striker Erling Haaland adopted a more urgent tone, framing the encounter in decisive terms. “It’s a massive game without a doubt. We all know the importance of this game. It’s like a final,” the Norwegian told Sky Sports. “It’s probably the biggest and the best game there will be, so hopefully it can be an amazing game.”

Guardiola confirmed that midfielder Nico O’Reilly is available for selection despite limping off at Stamford Bridge, while captain Ruben Dias remains sidelined through injury. City follow Sunday’s showdown with a trip to struggling Burnley on Wednesday, a fixture that could propel them to the summit for the first time in months should they prevail against Arsenal.

Arsenal are chasing a first league championship in 22 years, while City aim to extend their era of domestic dominance. The reverse fixture in September ended in a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium, with John Stones snatching a stoppage-time equaliser.
