PDP Has Overcome Internal Challenges, Ready For 2027 Elections – BoT Chairman
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has declared that the party has moved beyond the period of uncertainty caused by prolonged litigation and is now focused on rebuilding ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ohuabunwa expressed confidence that the party would emerge stronger and more united. He said the recent judgment of the Federal High Court had settled the leadership dispute within the party, adding that those still challenging the current leadership should accept the court’s decision. “The last Friday’s judgment of the Federal High Court should be enough for those who are yet to accept the reality of a new PDP to beat a retreat,” Ohuabunwa said.
The BoT chairman welcomed the Federal High Court’s decision, describing it as consistent with an earlier ruling of the Supreme Court. He emphasized that, as the conscience and moral compass of the party, the Board of Trustees fully respects and accepts the court’s verdict and remains firmly committed to upholding the rule of law. Ohuabunwa also warned that anyone parading himself as Chairman of the PDP BoT contrary to the court’s decision was engaging in criminal impersonation and would face legal action.
On July 17, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit filed by the Senator Adolphus Wabara-led BoT seeking an order for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise its faction. Justice Salim Ibrahim ruled that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to bring the case, noting it was an internal party matter. Consequently, the court awarded N140 million in costs against the plaintiffs and N10 million against their counsel for filing a frivolous suit. The judgment upheld the leadership of the party currently recognised by INEC under National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed. The Turaki-led faction has indicated it will appeal the ruling.
Ohuabunwa urged party leaders to embrace reconciliation and collective responsibility, stressing that the PDP must remain focused on strengthening its internal structures to emerge victorious in the 2027 elections. He assured that necessary steps would be taken to further strengthen the party’s unity, stability, and preparedness for upcoming electoral engagements.
