APC Clears Air On Tinubu–Shettima 2027 Ticket Amid Growing Speculation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima could be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the claims as baseless and mischievous.

Reacting to the speculation, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the party remains focused on governance and national development, not premature electoral calculations.

Morka explained that he had earlier issued a statement debunking the rumours, stressing that there was no factual basis to claims of a planned replacement of the Vice President.

“That story exists only in the realm of rumours and speculation. There is absolutely no fact to it,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria’s Electoral Act explicitly prohibits early campaign activities, adding that it was inappropriate for the party to engage in discussions about the 2027 ticket at this time.

“Speculating about replacing a sitting Vice President is wrong. It is simply mischievous and intended to sow confusion and discord in the polity,” Morka stated, adding that the APC’s priority remains rebuilding the economy and advancing governance reforms under the Tinubu administration.

Addressing concerns about religious and regional balance, the party spokesperson reassured Nigerians of the APC’s commitment to inclusivity.

“Our party is very inclusive. This question is not relevant at this time. When the appropriate moment comes, the APC has the capacity and sensibility to take decisions in the best interest of the country,” he said, declining to speculate further.

The APC leadership has repeatedly dismissed reports of Shettima’s possible replacement as “purely speculative, untrue, and utterly baseless.”

Despite the party’s consistent denials, speculation has continued to circulate within political circles, with several high-profile names reportedly being touted as alternatives.

The controversy gained renewed attention in mid-2025 following an APC North-East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe that descended into chaos after speakers endorsed President Tinubu for a second term without explicitly mentioning Vice President Shettima.

Later in the year, Shettima’s image was also reportedly absent from official APC banners displayed at a North-East zonal hearing in Maiduguri, further fuelling rumours about his political future.
