Accord Party Convention Endorses Imumolen as Presidential Flag Bearer
A faction of the Accord Party has selected Professor Christopher Imumolen as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election through a consensus process at a special national convention in Lagos.
The announcement was made in a statement by the faction National Secretary, Mallam Muktar Abdullah. Delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participated, with the outcome endorsed by party stakeholders nationwide.
The step provides the faction with a presidential flag bearer at a time when political parties are beginning to position themselves for the next electoral cycle. Imumolen previously ran for president in 2023 on the same platform. The faction stated that he returns with stronger grassroots structures and broader national reach.
Party leaders noted his support among younger members and said the candidacy could help draw more young voters and professionals to the party.
In his acceptance speech, Imumolen thanked the delegates and described his emergence as both a call to service and a reflection of the will of party members.
He pledged that an Accord led administration would confront unemployment, tackle insecurity and pursue economic reforms aimed at creating opportunities and reducing poverty.
“I have rightfully emerged as the candidate for Accord. The list will now be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and we await their official publication of the candidates later this September,” Imumolen said.
The faction reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, equity and transparency. It said measures have been put in place to address disagreements from the primary process and maintain party unity.
It also announced plans to unveil a comprehensive socio economic agenda in the coming weeks, outlining proposals for tackling the country economic and social challenges.
The faction called on Nigerians, particularly young people and professionals, to support its vision for national development.
This nomination places Imumolen in the 2027 presidential race as parties intensify preparations. The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed January 16 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections, with primaries scheduled between April and May 2026 and candidate submission timelines set for the months ahead.
Nigeria maintains a multi party system with more than 20 registered political parties according to recent official records. In this setting, smaller parties often hold conventions and name candidates early to sustain visibility, build internal structures and test appeal among key groups such as the youth.
Recent continuous voter registration updates show that people aged 18 to 34 made up nearly 70 per cent of new registrants in some phases, highlighting the demographic segment that several parties seek to engage.
The faction emphasis on youth support and a structured agenda forms part of wider efforts by political groups to present organised platforms ahead of the polls.
