Arsenal Draw Atletico As VAR Drama Shapes First Leg

A tense UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg in Madrid ended level as Julian Alvarez struck from the penalty spot to cancel out Viktor Gyokeres’s opener in a 1-1 draw between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in London, with both sides still chasing a first Champions League title. Arsenal, appearing in the semi-finals again after last season’s exit at the same stage, are aiming for a first final in two decades, while Atletico are back in the last four for the first time in nine years.

Arsenal edged ahead just before half-time when Gyokeres converted from the spot after being fouled in the area. The Swedish striker, introduced into the starting line-up amid fitness concerns for Kai Havertz, dispatched his effort with power beyond Jan Oblak despite the goalkeeper diving the right way.

The visitors had created little in open play, with Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke struggling to break through a compact Atletico side that dominated early possession. David Raya was called into action at the other end, tipping Alvarez’s effort wide as Atletico pressed.

Atletico responded strongly after the interval and drew level ten minutes into the second half when Ben White handled a shot from Marcos Llorente. Alvarez stepped up and made no mistake, driving home emphatically to restore parity after his recent penalty miss in the Copa del Rey final.

The Spanish side, led by Koke, pushed for a second goal, with Antoine Griezmann hitting the crossbar and Ademola Lookman going close on two occasions. Despite sustained pressure, Arsenal’s defensive structure held firm.

Late controversy followed when substitute Eberechi Eze went down in the penalty area under a challenge from David Hancko. The referee initially pointed to the spot but overturned the decision after a VAR review, ruling the contact insufficient.

Atletico captain Koke, speaking to Movistar, said: “We were the team we have to be, if we play at this level we can win. From my point of view they didn’t create much danger against us… the team defended well and they just had that penalty.”

The match contrasted sharply with the high-scoring semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich a day earlier, instead defined by cautious play and tactical discipline.

Attention now shifts to the second leg in London, where Arsenal will look to capitalise on home advantage, while Atletico aim to convert their dominant spells into a decisive result.
