“It’s Painful”: Gabriel Breaks Silence After Missed Penalty

Arsenal centre back Gabriel Magalhaes has broken his silence following his decisive penalty miss in the UEFA Champions League final, as the Gunners suffered a crushing shootout defeat to Paris Saint Germain on Saturday night, ending one of the most ambitious European campaigns in the club’s modern history.

The Brazilian defender, widely regarded as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League this season, took to Instagram in the aftermath of the loss to address Arsenal supporters and reflect on the heartbreak of falling at the final hurdle of European football’s biggest stage.

Arsenal had appeared on course for a historic triumph after striker Kai Havertz fired the North London club into an early lead, sending thousands of travelling Gunners faithful into raptures inside the stadium. The goal capped a dominant opening period in which Mikel Arteta’s side controlled possession, pressed aggressively, and limited PSG to sporadic counter attacks.

However, the French champions, who entered the final as reigning European champions following their maiden Champions League triumph last season, slowly clawed their way back into the contest. The momentum shifted decisively when Arsenal centre back Cristhian Mosquera was adjudged to have brought down Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Ousmane Dembele, the in form Ballon d’Or contender, calmly converted the resulting spot kick to restore parity for PSG and reset the trajectory of the final.

With both sides unable to break the deadlock through 90 minutes of regulation time and a further 30 minutes of extra time, the final was forced into the unforgiving lottery of a penalty shootout. The drama proved cruel for Arsenal, as Eberechi Eze, the England international and one of Arsenal’s marquee summer signings, saw his effort fail to find the back of the net. The blow deepened when Gabriel stepped up to take the club’s fifth penalty and failed to convert, handing PSG the decisive advantage that ultimately secured back to back Champions League titles for the Parisian club.

Reacting to the defeat, the Arsenal vice captain shared an emotional message addressed to the club’s global fan base.

“It’s painful, but I’m proud of this team and everything we achieved together this season,” Gabriel wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you to our incredible fans for your support every step of the way. You deserve to celebrate this journey with us and enjoy the parade today!”

“See you next season!!! Love, Big Gabi.”

The defeat is the second consecutive Champions League final loss for an English club at the hands of PSG, and it raises fresh questions about Arsenal’s ability to convert sustained domestic dominance into European silverware. The club had reached the final for the first time since 2006, when a Thierry Henry led side fell to Barcelona in Paris.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta defended the decision to entrust Gabriel with one of the latter penalties, a choice that has divided opinion among pundits and supporters in the hours following the final whistle. Despite the disappointment, Gabriel signalled his readiness to regroup, with focus already shifting toward the next campaign.
