Law School Admission: Full List Of Accredited Universities Released

The Council of Legal Education has published an updated list of 117 Nigerian universities approved to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme, warning that graduates from unaccredited institutions will not be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

In a public notice shared via its official Facebook page on Thursday, the council directed the warning at prospective law students, parents, and guardians. The statement, signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, said, “Students admitted into Law programmes in universities that are not accredited by the Council of Legal Education will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.”

The council also stated that universities which admit students into law programmes without its approval violate regulations governing legal education in Nigeria. It further declared that such institutions risk sanctions “in accordance with extant regulations and policy.”

The Council of Legal Education regulates legal education in Nigeria and supervises the Nigerian Law School. The body accredits universities to run law programmes and ensures compliance with standards for legal training.

The council was established under the Legal Education (Consolidation) Act. It oversees practical legal training for law graduates before their call to the Nigerian Bar. In Nigeria, law graduates must attend the Nigerian Law School to be called to the Bar and become qualified to practise law.

Among the 117 approved institutions, the council placed moratoriums on admissions for some universities. Baze University, Abuja, has a three-year moratorium from the 2023/2024 to the 2025/2026 session. Lead City University, Ibadan, has a five-year moratorium from the 2023/2024 to the 2027/2028 session. The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, has a two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 to 2025/2026 session.
