NDLEA Intercepts Massive Illicit Drug Shipment in Edo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 748kg of controlled pharmaceutical drugs in Edo State. Agents intercepted a Mercedes-Benz truck along the Benin-Lagos highway that was masquerading as an official Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) vehicle. The shipment, containing over one million capsules and tablets, was en route from Lagos to Onitsha. Two suspects, Osagie Igbinibo and Omijie Malik, are now in custody.

The seizure highlights the scale of the illicit pharmaceutical trade. The cargo included 23 cartons of Tramadol, 40 cartons of Rohypnol, and various injectables like Diazepam and Bromazepam. These substances are central to the country’s rising opioid crisis, which continues to drive addiction and health emergencies among the youth. The use of a vehicle bearing NLC insignia suggests that traffickers are increasingly turning to sophisticated cover tactics to evade detection.

Edo NDLEA Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju stated that the agency remains committed to dismantling these supply networks. The suspects face impending charges as investigators trace the source and intended destination of the shipment. This operation underscores the persistent challenge the agency faces in policing the nation’s major transit routes against the flow of highly addictive opioids.

The trafficking of such large quantities points to a well-resourced cartel operating within the region. NDLEA officials suggest that the long arm of the law will reach those behind these logistical networks. Investigations continue as the agency attempts to identify the wider distribution ring. Further arrests may follow as the case proceeds to the courts.
