Super Eagles Rocked by Bassey Injury Blow

Nigeria’s preparations for their upcoming international friendlies have suffered a fresh blow, with Calvin Bassey ruled out of the Super Eagles squad after sustaining a back injury during Fulham FC’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Burnley last weekend.

The withdrawal, confirmed just two days before Nigeria’s scheduled clash against Iran, adds to a mounting injury crisis that has significantly depleted head coach Eric Chelle’s options ahead of the fixtures.

Bassey is not alone on the casualty list. Victor Osimhen, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, and defender Ola Aina have all been ruled out, leaving the technical crew with a considerably thinner pool of players as preparations intensify at the team’s base in Antalya, Turkey.

No replacement is expected for Bassey given the proximity of the matches, a decision that will place added pressure on available defenders to fill the void left by his absence.

The Fulham centre-back has grown into one of the Super Eagles’ most reliable defensive assets since establishing himself in the Premier League. His ability to maintain defensive structure and execute quick transitions has made him a near-automatic selection under Chelle, making his unavailability a significant tactical concern.

Amid the setbacks, the camp received a welcome boost with the arrival of captain Wilfred Ndidi in Antalya, bringing the total number of players in camp to 22. Ndidi is expected to participate in the team’s first training session as the squad begins to take shape ahead of the friendlies.

With several first-choice players absent, the matches against Iran and Jordan are shaping up as more than routine warm-up games. They may now serve as a genuine opportunity for fringe players to press their case for a more permanent role in the national team setup, with Chelle watching closely for players capable of stepping into the gaps left by injuries.

Nigeria’s international friendlies form part of the Super Eagles’ broader preparation cycle as the team continues to build towards future qualification campaigns.
