Galatasaray Consider Captain Role For Osimhen
Victor Osimhen could be handed the captain’s armband at Galatasaray if the Istanbul club decides not to retain Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, Turkish football pundit Ali Naci Kucuk has disclosed.
“Galatasaray wants to give the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen if they don’t continue with Mauro Icardi,” Kucuk said, adding fresh dimension to ongoing conversations around the club’s leadership structure ahead of next season.
The potential elevation would mark a remarkable milestone in what has already been a historic chapter for the Nigerian striker in Turkey. Since joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, Osimhen has been instrumental to the club’s back to back Süper Lig title triumphs, contributed to a Turkish Cup victory and surpassed 50 goals across multiple competitive appearances in Turkish and European football.
This season alone, the 26 year old forward registered 15 league goals and five assists across 22 Süper Lig matches, while also netting seven goals and providing three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances before Galatasaray were knocked out by Liverpool in the round of 16.
His growing influence extends well beyond statistics. Club officials and supporters have increasingly acknowledged Osimhen’s presence in the dressing room as a stabilising and motivating force, a factor that appears central to the captaincy conversation now gaining traction at the Rams Park.
Following the club’s 26th Süper Lig title triumph, Osimhen joined his teammates for a courtesy visit to Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, an occasion that also served as public validation of the squad’s national significance. Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek presented the club’s jersey to the president during the reception, with players arriving in formal suits. Notably, this was Osimhen’s second such presidential visit, having previously attended a similar reception after the club’s preceding championship success.
Should Galatasaray secure the Süper Lig title again next season, the Istanbul side would become the first club in Turkish football history to clinch five consecutive league championships, a record that would cement this era as one of the most dominant in the competition’s history.
Despite the growing captaincy talk, speculation over Osimhen’s long term future at the club continues to intensify. Chelsea, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have all been linked with a possible move for the striker. Özbek, however, has held a firm line, previously stating publicly that the club would not entertain offers below €100 million for the Nigeria international.
The combination of a possible captaincy offer and a firmly set transfer valuation suggests Galatasaray are keen to retain the striker, whether through leadership incentives or commercial resistance to external suitors.
