Police Foil Massive Railway Vandalism Syndicate

The Nigeria Police Force has dismantled a significant railway vandalism ring, recovering stolen infrastructure valued at over N400 million. Operatives from the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS) arrested two suspects, Chisom Goodnews and Ahmed Adamu, on April 9 in Akwanga. The arrests followed a period of intense intelligence gathering. Police successfully intercepted a trailer truck transporting 60 tonnes of railway tracks and sleepers from Bauchi to Ilorin.

The syndicate attempted to conceal the stolen assets beneath layers of groundnut shells, a tactic designed to bypass police checkpoints and security scrutiny. Preliminary investigations suggest this was no opportunistic theft; it was a highly organised operation. The truck driver had been paid N2.5 million for the transit, indicating significant backing and established logistical networks. The scale of the theft suggests the syndicate is well-entrenched in the illicit infrastructure trade.

In a notable display of integrity, the arresting officers rejected a N100 million bribe offered to secure the release of the suspects and the confiscated materials. The trailer used in the haul has been impounded, and the investigation now shifts toward identifying the wider network, including the masterminds and the intended black-market buyers. Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu has praised the squad, citing their conduct as a benchmark for the Force.

This incident serves as a sharp reminder of the persistent threat posed to national infrastructure by organised syndicates. Railway assets remain a prime target for these groups, who exploit logistics gaps to strip the country of critical transit hardware. The Police command intends to maintain this aggressive posture to disrupt similar distribution rings. The investigation continues, with more arrests expected as the department tracks the supply chain back to its source.
